A study conducted in eleven countries, including Mexico, shows that the incidence of bipolar disorder is much greater than previously thought. It is a mental disease that can begin to affect a person at any time in your life, cause lifelong disability.
The research, published in Archives of General Psychiatry (Archives of General Psychiatry), included more than 61,000 people and found that up to 2.4% of the global population may suffer some form of the disease.
And this, say researchers from the National Institute of Mental Health United States, has been overlooked by most governments, mainly in low and middle income countries.
"Bipolar disorder is responsible for the loss of more years of disability-free life which all forms of cancer or major neurological disorders as epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease," says Dr. Kathleen Merikangas, who led the study.
"And this is mainly due to that usually appears very early and can last a lifetime," he adds.
